How we Teach Fruit Vocabulary in Portuguese

Our family is currently doing the Olá Portuguese for families curriculum so we can all learn Portuguese together. It something I created with my mom, a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, because it was so hard to find Portuguese content online. The very first activity in this curriculum is the fruit matching activity that builds vocabulary in Brazilian Portuguese.

My son already knows the basic fruits (apples, oranges, bananas etc.) in Portuguese but I wanted to expand his fruit vocabulary.

This activity is a 3 part card activity, commonly found in the Montessori method of learning. You can read up on how to use 3 part cards for language learning here

The set up is pretty simple. You can just print out the documents, cut them out, and you are ready to go! I like to laminate ours and sometimes use velcro for interest but it really depends on your child’s preference.

These cards a very simple but so adaptable.

The image above is the traditional way of using these cards but my son has zero interest using them this way. Instead I added velcro to the image, label, and control card so he can actually stick the cards together. He finds this a lot more fun!

Learning a language is more than just memorizing vocabulary words though. Kids learn language through living the language so we try to use Portuguese dialog while playing with the cards together. I made a simple sentence frame cheatsheet for parents to start incorporating Portuguese into the activity. It’s not a replacement for actually learning the grammar but it’s a good place to start.

Oh ya, each one of the activities comes with grammar lessons for parents, just check out the grammar corner on the Olá site.  For example, this particular activity has lessons for parents on gendered nouns.

I hope that little introduction helped! You can read up on the curriculum we’ve created and are using with our family. I know how hard it can be to find any Brazilian Portuguese resources for kids so I hope I can make your search a little easier!
