Learning to Read in Two Languages at the Same Time?

After we learned that William was hyperlexic and had taught himself to read, we realized that he was doing a lot of sight reading. I decided to step in and teach him phonics so that his phonics skills could catch up to his sight reading skills. The big question was do I teach him in English or Portuguese…or both? Is it possible? It is a good idea?

According to research:

“Overall, the findings provide tantalizing evidence that dual-language learning during the same developmental period may provide bilingual reading advantages.”

There’s my answer! You can teach your child to read in two languages at the same time and it might even be a good idea to do so.

Since William is already sight reading in English I decided to teach him phonics in Portuguese. Since the alphabets are almost identical he should be able to carry the phonics skills over to when he read in English.

How to use

If your child is verbal, then they can say the animal they see on the card and listen for the beginning sound. They have three options.

When they decide which letter is the beginning sound then they can clip the clothes pin on the letter. This activity is a great hands-on activity that words on motor skills as well as reading skills.

If your child is not verbal enough to say the animals then you can say the word for them and they can listen for the beginning sound that way.

Some animals do not have very common names (ex: yabby) so I added a cheat sheet for the parents. This can be a great opportunity to teach you child about new animals!
